During the Bubonic Plague, doctors wore these bird-like masks to avoid becoming sick. They would fill the beaks with spices and rose petals, so they wouldn’t have to smell the rotting bodies.

A theory during the Bubonic Plague was that the plague was caused by evil spirits. To scare the spirits away, the masks were intentionally designed to be creepy.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.

His bed was next to the room’s only window.

The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation..

Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.
Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days, weeks and months passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.
He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed.

It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, ‘Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.’

Epilogue:

There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.
Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.
If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can’t buy.
‘Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present .’

The origin of this letter is unknown, but please pass it on.

I wonder how a blind person was able to describe visual events to a seeing person with enough accuracy… color, texture, things that only a seeing person would comprehend. Then again, there’s a 100 how’s and why’s to a story like this.

He could have lost his sight somewhere…

So I wanted to leave you guys with something happy for tonight. The other day we had a party at my cousin’s apartment, it was about 7 am when we all went to sleep. Suddenly, the roommate’s girlfriend screams, we all run upstairs expecting… idk wtf we were expecting, so finally we are like “what?! What’s going on?!” and she is like “I don’t know where [pedro] is!”, we gave her a confused stare, “what?”.

“He was here a minute ago, but he is not here anymore”

So, thinking they are trying to pull a prank on us we look for him around the room… Can’t find him… We tell her that its enough we are going to sleep.

She starts sobbing, she was pretty drunk… “I swear I don’t know where he is!”. We get freaked out and start looking for him, nothing. Finally I check the closet again, and I see some clothes piled together… I found him underneath it. So, we take him out, (I accidentally banged his head against the wall) and put him back in bed…

Twenty minutes later we hear her scream again… we go back up… “He’s gone again” we go check the closet… nothing there… we look under the bed, nothing there… we look in all the other rooms and he is nowhere to be found… Eventually I open the bathroom and pull the shower curtains and found him like this… Now, you might be thinking, “Oh, he is just playing a prank”… let me tell you about that bathtub… They bath the dog in there, they don’t clean it (there is another shower in the apartment) and its just completely dirty… not to mention, he was actually sucking on the drain…

So, I hope you guys find this as funny as we did. Cheers.

So many times I have thought to myself, “just go, you know where she is. Just go”. It wouldn’t be so hard. Leave everything behind, not coming back. Find her. Love her.

I’ve imagined getting out of a taxi, in the middle of winter. With just destiny playing a joke on me and having her walk by. I’d see her, but she wouldn’t recognize me. I’d laugh to myself, “what are the odds”? Get a small apartment nearby, and just take in the city little by little.

One day, I was buying fruit from a cart on the street, children waiting all around, school had just let out. She’d see me from far, and for a moment something on her mind would strike… but she wouldn’t know me.

And who knows, maybe one day she’ll sort through her old messages and find one of mine, maybe she’ll smile. Then she’d realize, I’ve been so close, and she didn’t even know.

I have no right though, no right to ruin what she has like that. I can’t just walk in, I know she couldn’t bare it. Even if I did, who is to say that it would last. People change, people grow, people leave and aren’t meant to come back.

Anyways, she says she’s happy now, and to me that’s enough.
